The weekend kind of starts today
It sounds like this is going to be a very busy weekend indeed around town. But before you take a look, don’t forget to keep Lori and the Martins relevant. Here’s the look:
Since everyone considers the weekend to start around Thursday around here, let’s hope it doesn’t rain as Drumline is played in Linn Park this evening as part of Movies by Moonlight. The activities begin around 6 p.m., with the film starting shortly after 8 p.m. Check out this post to see what else is going on around town.
Then Friday…
One thing… Art on the Rocks starts at 5! Aqualung plays.
The Function rolls on!
One of the festivals that don’t get a lot of immediate notice around town is the 22nd Annual Function at the Junction festival in Ensley. A parade makes its way down 19th Street Ensley beginning at 10 a.m., with music beginning shortly after the last entry gets to Erskine Hawkins Park. Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes will be performing.
Sunflower redux
If you didn’t get to the Gardens at Park Place last Saturday, you can either:
- Check out our photo set of the event
- Check out the Birmingham News’ photos
- Or just go out there and pick some more this Saturday!
It seems that the word on the street is that there are enough sunflowers left over (and so many people enjoyed it) to do it again. Click here to learn more about it at the Jones Valley Urban Farm website. It definitely added to last week’s list of hidden treasures.
Bare Hands turns 10!
One more event that’s taking place this weekend is taking place at Bare Hands Gallery, as the gallery begins to celebrate 10 years. Click here to learn more about the gallery and upcoming exhibitions at their website. Check out the previous post to learn more about the event. We’ve written about the importance of this gallery before. Get out there, if you have enough time to do so, and show your love.
Why so many activities listed?
There are probably a few that wonder why there are this many events posted on the blog. It does go towards the idea that there are great things happening in Birmingham and that we need to be able to support as many of them as possible. I try to explain it on the About Dre page. What better way to do that, especially during the summer, than raising the awareness of a few of them?
Neon in Birmingham’s new page
Speaking of raising awareness, you’ll notice that there’s a new page on the blog dedicated to providing easy links to the Neon in Birmingham series. We’re going to add some additional features as the list expands, so check it out and watch it grow.
E-mail us your thoughts, or just comment here. Enjoy the day.
Cheers.
