Vulcan Park and its welcome center are a great intro to the area's geography and history. The Civil Rights Institute tells a powerful story very well. I always like to walk from there to Linn Park, stroll through the BMA and the old library and maybe the Church of the Advent. On a nice day, the Botanical Gardens are always a good bet, too.

Vulcan, most definitely. She should also see the Alabama folk art exhibit the Museum of Art has on 1st Ave. N. And I'd say Naked Art, but I'm biased. :) I also like showing visitors the Botanical Gardens, though on a prettier day than today.

I'm glad you mother is going to visit! What does she like? That's a question that has to be answered before tailored recommendations can be made.

The semi-obligatory visit to Vulcan is good, and it offers a lovely view of both Birmingham and Homewood.

I think I remember that your mother is/was a nurse or medical professional? If so, UAB's Reynolds Historical Library has a collection of historical books and Civil War medical artifacts that she might be interested in viewing.

You probably have a better handle on sites to visit around here now, than most folks. :)
