Dre,

As a baseball fan and a junior faculty member at an area Division II school (U. of Montevallo), I appreciate your argument. I was surprised about BSC's jump to Division I initially and it should surprise few who follow college athletics that a school of that size is going to have a difficult time meeting the attendance standards and other requirements of a Division I institution.

At UM, our basketball team has done quite well over the last couple of seasons, winning back-to-back conference championships and going to the Division-II Elite Eight this year. Our baseball team has just clinched their first trip to the NCAA South Central Regional Tournament. The fact that these achievements rarely make it into the Birmingham News is a source of frustration for our administration, I suspect, who are rightfully proud of our accomplishments, but everyone I've met who knows anything about our school knows that a degree issued by it means something. That, and the "small college" experience is what we're most proud of. The achievements of our student-atheletes in the recent years is sweet icing on the cake.

Yours, Jason
